For some further research I watched recently released (2010) film Submarine directed by Richard Ayoade.
It carries a lot of themes and ideas that I have thought of for my trailer, especially the young protagonist Oliver Tate is very similar to Tom in his looks, mannerisms and how he copes with different events that face him. It is also a very unique film/trailer which has an arts and vintage flare, which I would like to recreate. The shots are put together quickly and have a fast editing pace which is a trait of drama trailers as I found out in my textual research. It also has lots of voice over which is another reoccurring theme and something that I most definitely want to feature in my trailer. The music is by indie sensation Alex Turner so that also gives the audience a feel of what the characters will be like and portrays a good overall feel of the film. I am going to have some indie, light rock possibly acoustic music in my trailer to add this authentic and classic feel.
From my short synopsis, I have decided on some intital shots that will feature in my trailer. Firstly some shots to introduce the main protagonist Tom in the garden, and a voice over to further introduce him, his state of mind and a question to give the audience something to think about. This will follow with some shots of the location he is in, poor, derelict and grubby. Next a shot will introduce Hilda, possibly sitting in a chair drinking and then a fast shot to Tom doing an array of chores (ashing up, folding clothes, ect) around the house to show he is under her thumb. Then more short shots of the drugs (Temazepam) and alcohol. Next a shot of Tom with a jaded expression looking out of the window watching Hilda go out, suggesting he is trapped in the house.
Next a medley of short shots; a shot of a grave then Tom arriving at Allison and Tulips house in the countryside (Auntie and Cousin), this will be a shot of Tom at the door from behind. Then a shot of him greeting them with CU's to Tulips happy face. This follows with some shots of Tom enjoying himself in the countryside (a wide open shot) and some location shots, CU's to his happy expression, then short fast shots of him playing with Tulip in the fields, chatting and having fun. Then a few shots (slow editing pace) of Tulip introducing Tom to Sally with a Close Up of Toms elated face and one of the flowers in Sallys hair. Then them running of into the distance together. Suddenly the mood changes and we get shots of Tom arguing with Tulip and Allison about what he can and can't do, for example them helping him to get dressed or making him a cup of tea thinking he isn't capable when he is now (as he isn't being drugged anymore). Then a shot of Tulips infected arm, and the needles, perhaps on her lap or on an empty cheap table. Fade to black.
I think these are effective shots as they definitely leave the audience wanting to know more. However these are my first initial thoughts on what parts to include from my synopsis so with more research and test shots these could alter and they will become more specific.
From my pitch my teacher and peers thought my initial ideas for my film poster and magazine cover were strong and my media teacher thought it was great that I had distinguished between my audience for my trailer and for the film magazine.
First Storyboard of Trailer:
This is my first storyboard of my trailer, it does not include intertitles or a green screen. I think my shot ideas are effective however when I get get round to filming, some extra shots may be included as when on location with the actors a new creative idea may come to me, for example the angle of the camera or position of actors in the frame. If this does happen the changes or new additions will be posted on the blog.
