This moodboard represents my genre's repertoire and the findings from my textual research. It also showcases some hidden meanings as to the plotline of my film. In the top left hand corner you can see my costume influences which include in season vintage pieces that showcase timeless style. These kinds of outfits are typical of unique individuals and they connote individuality, thinking for yourself, not following the crowd and being your own person. In addition the props; slr camera, skateboard and alcohol help to suggest the drama genre and also suggest parts of the characters personalities. The locations featured suggest a sense of being trapped (barbed wire, and fencing), apart from one which is the open countryside. Slogans 'HURTS, Cutie, and NEVER HIDE' are there to suggest the plotline and reinforce the different emotions the characters will go through in the film.'NEVER HIDE' slogan is inspirational to my main character Tom who has hidden his whole life but breaks out of his shell thanks to some of the other characters.
Spread across the board I have images of character types that will feature in my film/trailer; The confused/lost boy and girl, the alcoholic and the friendly faced teenage girl.
In the long shot of the woman, it appears like she is being watched reinforced by the blurred thumb in the camera lense. This corresponds directly to my film plotline.
- By writing a short synopsis of my film will help me select sections of the film that can be showcased in my teaser trailer.
Tom is a movie about finding yourself.
The main character Tom is a 14 year old boy who has a small form of Aspergers syndrome. He appears to have difficulty with social interaction and his behaviour is restricted and repetitive. His main interest is gardening. Tom lives in a small bungalow in a poor town in County Durham with his gran, Hilda, who is a strong and abusive alcoholic. She keeps Tom within her reach as she is afraid of being alone, and the only way she can do this is by drugging him with Temazepam regularly. This makes Tom's condition worse and he hardly never leaves the house/garden. Hilda constantly demeans Tom and portrays him to everyone as heavily mentally disabled.
A few months pass and Hilda passes away. Tom finds himself moving to live with his auntie Allison and his female cousin Tulip who is 16. They live a modest life in the countryside and Tom begins to dream of a better future. Allison spends little time with Tulip as she is still morning the loss of Tulips father who passed away through alcohol abuse 8 years previous. Tulip, alike Tom have no role models.
Tom's new family wraps him in 'cotton-wool' because of his condition but he starts to feel uncomfortable with this as he becomes less incompetent and feels he can do everything on his own now. Tom starts to feel more alone than ever before.
Tulip and Tom go and have fun in the countryside and as they spend more time together they grow closer and Tulip takes Tom under her wing. Tom starts to share his most haunting stories about his past with her, and Tulip listens and tells Tom about how she has just started taking antidepressants as she feels lonely but feels happier as he is now here. Tom senses that Tulip could be going through a lot more than she lets on. Here, Tom meets Sally Tulips friend, and he falls for her beauty almost straight away. She has flowers in her hair and Tom thinks that this could be the start of something beautiful.
Sally and Tom start spending more and more time together and Tulip drifts away to join a group of undesirable friends. She tries to drag Tom into her new world and his relationship with Sally hits rough spots when Tulips new friends get in the way and he blames her for their bad situation. Tom spots a infected spot on Tulips arm where she is injecting heroin. She is becoming a shadow of her former self and Tom begins to feel like he wants to fix things with Sally and move away and start a better life with her. He begins to learn that he has no attachment to his dysfunctional relatives.
The film closes with shots of Tulip in a hospital bed with fragile Allison by her side, Hilda's grave, and Tom & Sally holding hands looking content walking through a landscaped garden he helped to create.
